World Cruise - Day 61 - Mar 13 - At Sea

Today there was no real sunrise to speak of, due to overcast skies.  It’s pretty chilly today, with a low of 37 and a high around 48.  So we went from extremely warm just a few days ago in Guam to what we would normally be seeing this time of year in Seattle.  Most of you reading this blog are having better weather than us.  I heard that it was 60 in Chicago and 70 in Philadelphia yesterday.  It will be cooler for us for the next week, then we move back south toward Hong Kong and then back to very hot with Vietnam, Thailand, etc. shortly thereafter.
We did see this as we looked out our balcony window this morning:
We couldn’t figure out if it was a stationary oil rig/platform of if it was actually a moving boat with some sort of drill on top?  I think maybe the latter, since it has a bow and bridge?
At trivia this morning we got 16 out of 20, winning team got 17 out of 20.  Here are the four we missed:  What racing series became best out of 9 in 1995?  America’s Cup (we put Grand Prix).  What was the name of Nichole Kidman’s character in Moulin Rouge?  Satine (we put Kitty).  What does UNICEF stand for?  United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (we put United Nations International Children’s Education Fund).  What video helped Michael Jackson’s Thriller album sales to soar?  Beat It (we put Thriller).  Other interesting questions:  What animal did the UK stop executing for witchcraft in 1712?  Cat.  What animal is mentioned most frequently in the Old and New Testaments?  Lamb.  What large animal starves to death after losing its sixth and final set of teeth?  Elephant.  What is the longest poisonous snake?  King cobra.  How many days can an ant survive underwater—1, 2, 3, or 4?  2.  What creature has 98.4% common DNA with humans?  Chimpanzees.
Sonia, the judging for the photo contest onboard is done by a panel of judges, although I don’t think any of them are on the photography staff.  They tend to pick photographs with interesting subjects, rather than photos that are great photos.  The Cruise Critic photo contest is judged by me and Krissie, so my photos are not entered nor considered.  I try to look for the best photo overall (including both subject and photo composition).
We could see the Japanese mainland (Honshu) from the starboard of the ship at lunch:
Also several boats in the area, some coming pretty close behind our ship.  Wondering if they were maybe fishing boats hoping to take advantage of our wake stirring up some catch, like the dolphins?
Afternoon trivia we got 18 out of 20, 20 won it (i.e. they got them all correct).  The two we missed:  Poland’s independence day marks its date of independence in 1918.  What is the month and day?  November 11 (we said November 8; hint: Nov 11 is Armistice Day for WWI, when Poland gained its independence).  What is the only African nation to be independent before WWI?  Liberia (we said Ethiopia).  Other interesting questions:  What played silent movie star Donald Lockwood?  Gene Kelly.  What poet wrote: “An echo back Lenore, this and nothing more.”  Edgar Allen Poe.  What is the name of the Jamaican who won the 100 meter dash in the 2008 Olympics?  Usain Bolt.  Folic acid is credited with reducing the occurrence of this birth defect that literally means split spine?  Spina Bifida.  What poet gained fame with North of Boston and a Pulitzer Prize for New Hampshire?  Robert Frost.
Evening entertainment was the Pacific Princess Singers and Dancers in Motor City with lots of Motown music:
I got a nice pic of Lorraine with her drink at the show:
Tomorrow is Hiroshima.  We are going to the Peace Memorial in the morning, then to shrine island in the afternoon.
